LACS goodbye

My last day @ CUCEI was also the last time I saw LACS alive.

There was a meeting scheduled the day before vacations and I decided to go, to share a last time with my professors who became my friends and then my co-workers/peers.

Once the meeting was over, we went to receive our payslip, I got mine pretty early but stayed talking with my “mother from CUCEI” on sideline.

Another friend came and we were all talking and then LACS turned up, so I went to say Hi as always, so we started talking until he was about to receive his payslip or after that, I don’t remember exactly.

The things we discussed:

  1. Me learning python, how I considered to be a weird language, slow and highly disappointed of its PVM. He told me that Python was a great language for learning and teaching, that he liked it and I should give it some slack…so I decided to do it; I don’t think I would have respected the language I’m using right now if other person have told me something like this.
  2. My goodbye from CUCEI, I told him I was quitting my last class @CUCEI(Compilers) because of the distance from home and that I will continue teaching on grad school@ CUCEA. He told me to not be an stranger, that we will keep in touch by whatsapp/email but that I should and visit from time to time, he gave me a big hug and told me that he hoped to collaborate with me again in the future.

Obviously @ the moment none of us thought that will be the last time we will see each other but it was, and it was the closest to a real goodbye with closure I will ever have from him.

I miss you big brother.

Best compliments I ever received

After my gramps died, my grandma told me that in all the family I was the one most similar to him, the one who worked harder…I don’t think she said smarter but she said smart as him; and well thats a lot.

After LACS died, in his religious goodbye, my “mother from CUCEI” told me that I was the one most similar to him, smart and saw CS in a similar way…but I didn’t have the same areas of opportunity that he did have.

Those 2 are probably the best compliments I will ever receive…until somebody compare with my mom.

My PhD 1/? ITESO

When I finished my master on 2k14, I thought that I will never continue my studies, I was so tired( 2 jobs, studying and 2 girlfriends-at different times of course), that I didn’t want to do it again.

Late 2017 I decided I could continue my studies with a phd on ITESO, because of the discount and scholarship offered by Oracle. I started all the protocolos but I faced the problem of a lack of phd in it or cs.

I tried that LACS become my thesis’ director but at the end it didn’t worked, I thought I will continue with JFHA as director but at the end, the object of study of my phd was removed from my grasp when I was moved to another team on Oracle, that was the moment when I decided to take a raincheck on my phd.

LACS linkedin recommendation

Some time ago I used to be on comics forums, some of them were only accesible if another user invited you, I was added twice by some of the most respect users there was;  that was something I was really proud but nothing as this recommendation I received on LinkedIn by LACS

Fernando is one of the most motivated and driven person I have ever know. I had the opportunity to be his academic advisor, professor and, eventually, partner in the University of Guadalajara. We had the chance to exchange a diversity of matters during enriching chats. He is the kind of person you do not need to teach anything. It’s been an honor to share with him!

I asked for that recommendation to him and as always he helped me out.

I have a bunch of recommendation all of them are very special to me, but given the circumstances this is most meaningful to me; LACS recalls when he was my tutor and marks that eventually we became peers, at least by working on the same place because he was the teacher I felt I will never be a match.

LACS visit

So day of the dead passed last weekend, it was last Saturday, for me it was another Saturday since nobody on my MX family normally do something for that day.

In the evening I went out to Jan´s house, had some drinks and talk about a lot of things.

I went to sleep as normal in the bedroom that used to be mine and I had a dream with LACS, he was still dead but some researches managed to build something that kind of communicates with the dead but wasn´t quite successful , I ended up seeing him as a projection while they were checking something on the PC, but his projection wasn´t like he was alive, he was just a projection of what people there remember of him or some relationship with the place.

Next day on my dream I was passing a store walking and I saw him again, talking with a lady about the bag of groceries he had. He managed to walk out of the store but he will immediately go back to the store and start all over again but this time he noticed me and greeted me with his usual “Hola mi fer” or ” Ese mi fer”, I talked with him and I think he told me that he knew he was dead but didn’t know what else was going, I let him know about the research because I thought he might be interested, he did and come up with the idea that maybe if all the versions of him that were created with the machine from memories or places got together he might be able to come back somehow.

He and me started walking to the university, then some other versions of him came along but I was unable to reach the university, there was kind of like stopping me, I jumped from a tree to another but always came back to the same place.

I didn’t think of him that day and the only thing related to dead was Dr Who S8 season finale, I know dreams are the way the mind fixes itself and confronts dreams but for this time I choose to believe that it was a visit =)

Welcome gift

When I started teaching at the university, I had a lot of acquaintances since I was a student there, so a good amount of the professors were my teachers.

I had been teaching for a week or two at the time, but I still haven’t got my key to the classroom, so I had to ask another professor passing by to open the classroom for me. One day LACS was passing by and I asked, he of course opened the classroom for me and went to his cubicle, he came back and told me he heard I was teaching but hasn’t seen me yet, now that he saw with his eyes he wanted to the welcome me to the guild, so he gave an eraser and a marker.

I already had a marker(exactly the same as the one he gave me) and a similar eraser and what he gave was just another marker and eraser he had but it is the only welcome gift I received at the time on my first job and it came from the best professor the faculty had who was also my tutor…to the day I still have both marker and eraser, stored on a ziploc bag as a fond memory of my early years and one of the only 2 things I have from lacs.

LACS first meeting

When I started my bachelors in informatics, I was randomly assigned a tutor as everybody else, I didn’t how he was nor he knew me.

Sometime in the semester, he scheduled a meeting to get to know me and plan for the next semester.

I asked around how he was, my programming teacher told me that he was one of the best teachers and was certainly the brightest, so I went with high expectations.

When I met him, he was wearing casual clothes, not at all like an academic snob I thought he will be.

We talked about his role in my career and stuff like that, at the end of the meeting I asked him for his big Simpsons’ poster and he told me that he loved the Simpsons, we talked about them around 1 hour and he told me the was afraid of becoming stupid like Homer, cuz’ he was getting fatter and balder with the time. I remember I spotted Homer dressed with other clothes and he explained that he was Homer’s brother and that he only appeared so far in 1 episode so far.

Visual BASIC and change

On mid 2011, I started teaching Visual BASIC and I asked LACS what did he think about the language, since he taught C# around the time and he was very fond of it.

He told me that he learned the language but didn’t like that every release changed everything, from the syntax to how it worked on the background; the only constant in that language is the change

Later when Visual Studio 2013 came out, I noticed a few changes, so I knew he was right

PD 2nd round

So I had a second interview with PD, first interview went OK but they @ the end, the job opening didn’t come through, so after a few months another recruiter contacted me and we started another process.

This second interview it was with a couple of MX guys, they asked a lot of questions regarding Java basics, OO on Java, keywords, threads and stuff like that, pretty simple…and if I remember correctly, they said that polymorphism could be done with overload and overwrite; something that has come up quite popular.

This is something I discussed with LACS one time because I was curious about it, he told me that the idea has become popular but he thought the same as me, is not really polymorphism when you do and overload. He even said that there was polymorphism a @compile-time and @execution-time, according to this new line that wasn’t as close to the original OOP.
